Asher Holmes Elementary school was named after a colonel who fought for the colonial army during the Revolutionary War. His home was located in what is now Marlboro just a few miles from where the school is now. Monmouth County was about evenly divided between Loyalists and those wanting independence from England.

The Battle of Monmouth, famous because of the heroism of Molly Pitcher, was fought a few miles west of here. The British had to move supplies from the ocean to the battle site. Col. Holmes twice led the First Monmouth Militia which he commanded in bloody charges against these supply lines as they moved down the area of Dutch Lane.

Col. Holmes' house has recently been razed, but the school is fortunate to have received a mantle from the home, a foundation stone, and a photograph of the house to remind our students of our connection to the past.
