You can use FTP to transfer files between your local computer and our server. One of the most popular FTP programs is Winsock FTP (WS_FTP). This document explains the basics of using WS_FTP.
If you have any comments, give us your feedback.
Startup Session Dialog:
When you start WS_FTP, you're presented with the dialog box shown above. Select the exit109
profile. Enter your User ID and Password in the appropriate boxes.
If you don't have an exit109 profile, create one using the New button.
Enter the information shown. (In either case, don't forget to press Save to save the
profile.)
Once you've entered your User ID and Password, press OK to make the FTP connection..
Managing your FTP Session:
Once you've connected to the remote system, you should see the main FTP window
similar to the one shown below. The screen is split in half, left and right.
The left side of the screen shows the currently active directory on your PC,
while the right side shows the currently active directory on the remote
computer. There are control buttons for each computer along the right
edge of each side of the window.
If both sides of the window are not filled in, you've probably
mistyped your User ID or Password in the session
dialog. The status box near the bottom of the window will probably
show an error message. In either event, hit Connect to bring up
the Session dialog and try again.
Setting Up
The first thing you'll need to do is set the current directory on both
systems to the proper location to send and receive files. The current
locations are shown in the Local System and Remote System
text boxes near the top of the screen.
Notice that each side of the window is further split into top and
botton halves. The top half of each side, shows any subdirectories in the
current displayed Location, while the bottom half shows the
files contained in the currently displayed Location.
On the right side, change directory to the public_html
directory under your login directory. You can do this by finding
public_html in the top half of the Remote System and
double clicking on it, or by clicking the ChDir button and
entering public_html in the text box that is displayed.
On the left side, select the directory where your home page files
reside by clicking on the ChDir button and entering the path to
that directory in the text box that is displayed. Alternatively, you
can double click on the directories displayed in the top half of the Local
System side (Remember, .. moves you up one directory). Any
changes will be reflected in the Local System box near the top
of the window.
Transferring Files
Once you've set the current location for both machines, you're ready
to transfer files. Select the file to be sent by clicking on it.
Choose the type of transfer (ASCII, or Binary) for the
file you're sending. HTML files should be sent using ASCII,
while image files and other non-text files should be sent using
Binary.
Now that you have selected the file to be sent, click on the proper
arrow button - left or right. These buttons are in the space between
the Local System and Remote System sides of the screen.
This will start the file transfer. Continue this process for each
file you want to transfer, until you've completed all files. You can then
close your ftp session by clicking the Close button at the bottom of
the window.
