News NNTP Server: news.exit109.com

The most common problem with accessing Usenet (aka news) groups is the use of Usernames and Passwords with your newsreader program. Our news server, news.exit109.com, DOES NOT use a username and password table. If you have entered a username and password in your newsreader program, you will be DENIED access to the news server. Make sure you don't have a username and password entered in your newsreader program.


Select Options..Mail and News Preferences.. and click on the Servers tab. The news NNTP server is news.exit109.com. Click OK.

To read news, select Window..Netscape News.. and then select File..Open News Host.. and type in news.exit109.com.


Select Edit..Preferences.. and click the small plus sign ( Plus Sign ) next to Mail & Groups. Click on Identity and fill in your name and your e-mail address (username@exit109.com). Click on Groups Server. The Discussion Groups (news) server should be news.exit109.com. Port should be 119. Secure should not be checked.

The Discussion Group (news) folder should be pre-set, but is usually set to a directory under your Netscape\Users directory, possibly C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\username\news. If this is already set to something that looks sensible you can leave it.

Click on Messages and make sure By default, send HTML messages is not checked.


Select News..Options and click Server. Enter your Name as you want it to appear on Usenet posts, and your Email Address (username@exit109.com). To add news.exit109.com as a news server, click Add and enter news.exit109.com for News Server Name. Our news server does not require you to logon. Click Set as Default to make this your default news server. Click Connection and choose I use a modem, and ensure that your exit109 dial-up networking connection is selected. Click Ok.

Click Send. Under News sending format select Plain Text. Click Ok. You can obtain a list of available newsgroups by clicking the Newsgroups button.


Select Tools..Accounts.. and then click Add..News..   using the wizard, type in your name, then your e-mail address (username@exit109.com). For the news NNTP server, enter news.exit109.com. Do not check the box next to 'my news server requires me to logon'. Select a Friendly Name for the account, such as exit109 news, and click Next. Most people will want to choose 'Connect using my phone line' under Connection Type. You will need to select your modem and the exit109 connection as the one to dial. Click Finish.

Open the Tools menu and select Options and click Send. Make sure News sending format is set to Plain Text.

To read news, select Tools..Newsgrups.. or click Read News in the right frame.


The first time you run Agent it will automatically ask you for its setup information. For Your Name fill in your name as you want it to appear on Usenet posts and email that you send. Organization is optional and can be anything you want. For NNTP Server enter news.exit109.com. SMTP Server should be mail.exit109.com. You also need to enter your email address (username@exit109.com).

If you are changing an already-installed copy of Agent, open the Options menu and choose User and System Profile. Enter your name and email address under User and ensure that No login is required is selected. Select System and enter news.exit109.com for News Server. Select Send email with SMTP and enter mail.exit109.com for Email Server.

Go to the Online menu and choose Refresh Groups List. This will download the full list of newsgroups from the server. You can display the full list of available newsgroups by clicking the bar at the top of the newsgroups list (where it says Subscribed Groups) until it says All Groups.
