This will show you how to configure Windows95/98 for dialup access into the exit109 Internet Service. If
you have any problems or comments regarding these directions, please send them to
admin@exit109.com
Step ONE: Install TCP/IP
Step TWO: Setup Dialup
- Double click on My Computer
- Double click on Dial-up Networking
If you do not have a "Dial-up Networking" Icon, you must install the Dialup Networking portion
of Windows 95 before you can proceed any further. Please consult your documentation on how to
add and remove programs from Windows 95.
- Double click on Make New Connection
- Name it exit109, then click next.
- Enter 732 for the area code if you are in the 609 or 201 area codes.
- Enter the dialup number for your area:
- Red Bank - 758-1975
- Toms River - 929-0928
- Englishtown - 446-1807
- Spring Lake - 449-2015
- Click next, then click finish.
- Now you have a new icon named "exit109"
- Click the Right mouse button on that icon, choose Properties.
- Click on "Server Type"
- Make sure type of Dial-Up Server type is PPP:Windows 95,...
- Only TCP/IP needs to have a checked box (uncheck all other boxes)
(see screenshot) This is extremely
important.
- Click on TCP/IP Settings.
- Server assigned IP address should be selected, (if not, select it)
- Server assigned name server addresses should be selected, (if not, select it)
- Make sure Use IP header compression is checked
- Make sure Use default gateway on remote network is checked
- Click OK until you get back to the Dial-Up networking folder
Step THREE: Connecting
- Double click on the exit109 connection icon you have just created.
- Enter your username and password. Your username is all one word, lower case, with no spaces.
Your password will not show, so type it very carefully. Your password must be entered exactly
as it was assigned to you. In particular, the case of the letters is important - make sure CAPS
LOCK is not on.
- Click on connect. If you have entered the information correctly, your modem will dial and you will
be promptly connected. If you have made any mistakes, Windows will give you an error message.
In particular, if your username or password are incorrect you will receive a request to reenter your
password. Correct the errors and try it again.
Winsock software that you may have used before is no longer needed. Once a connection is made, you
can use any of your previous Windows 3.1 programs such as Netscape, NX, and others. However, you
will probably want to upgrade to the 32-bit versions for better performance.
Attention AOL & Microsoft Network Users!
If you have ever used the Microsoft Network (MSN), you will have a WINSOCK.DLL file stored in
your windows directory. This file is NOT compatable with any Internet provider. In order to access the
Internet using an Internet provider like us you will need to use the original WINSOCK.DLL that was
shipped with Microsoft Windows 95. This file should be in your windows directory and named
WINSOCK.OLD. So, 1) Rename your WINSOCK.DLL to WINSOCK.MSN and then 2) Rename your
WINSOCK.OLD to WINSOCK.DLL.
The next time you restart Windows 95, the correct WINSOCK.DLL will be used and you'll be able to
dial out to the Internet.
