Data stored in a spreadsheet can be quickly and easily charted using AppleWorks5 software. This can be useful to students when analyzing the results of a hands-on science experiment, plotting their progress from test to test in a particular subject, interpreting data in a social studies text, or as a tool for completing math units on statistics. The ability to create charts and graph of data and to interpret nontextual information when it's presented by others is a necessary skill for modern society members and its importance is represented throughout the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards as well as in many Marlboro Township curriculum guides.

Agenda
Introduction
Purpose: To remind teachers of the importance of the use of graphical data presentations for students and of the need for student competence is interpreting and creating graphs
To give teachers computer skills needed to create materials they can use in instruction which help students become competent graph readers
To give teachers ideas for ways in which students can use spreadsheets to assist in creating graphs
Paper/Pencil Activity - Bar Graph
Teachers will complete a bar graph on the growth of lighthouses in the Great Lakes region (Packet)
Demonstration - Drawing a line graph
Teachers will watch demonstration of steps for creating a line graph plotting the building of selected important lighthouses. Examples of completed line graphs are in the packet.
Individual Creation of Bar Graph using Computer
Teachers will use AppleWorks to create a bar graph duplicating the paper/pencil graph previously drawn.
