Lacy Stuff

Everything I pick up seems to have something to say about lace; same on your end? I was unable to resist the call and am working on this lace shawl by Meg Swansen. Mine is in plum-colored and natural black icelandic wool; I think it will be lovely. The lace pattern itself is lovely when not wound around a model's neck as a bunched-up scarf.

I'm not using icelandic laceweight but instead, unspun icelandic singles straight off the wheel. It's very fragile in the knitting part, but totally sturdy-yet-yummy once knitted...how do those clever sheep do that? When I'm knitting, if I don't watch my tension, I pull the single apart, but then it goes back together instantly with a twist (no spit required).

Even while knitting lace, I will no doubt be buying some of this absolutely wonderful imho lacy packing tape...fabulous in either black or white. From Boiler Design Office, who have this to say about lace:

Kings and aristocrats used to stick it on everything. What is our modern day equivalent to such a frivolous statement? Why not put lace on a roll of tape so we can stick it on everything too?

Why not, indeed? I sez, filled with gratitude toward all things internetty. I saw this on Cool Hunting, where there is always something fabulous. They, in turn, point to Knitta Please, with lots of photos here of their "fresh, aerosol-free knit-graf" that they are sticking on everything. Pounding heart here! When I get tired of knitting (and I do, what with all the knitted boobs and knitted hats-with-horns-or-ears-or-fruit-on-top and anything labeled 'fresh' 'funky' 'hip' or 'edgy'-knitting), stuff like this makes me fall in love again. Thank you all so very much!

Lots of recently abandoned knitting around here--gloves, mitts, and several pairs of socks. I'd better get busy. Happy Tuesday, here's our Della in a mood, in sunshine:

Oh dear. Look away! Look away! I'm not at all sure I should share this photo of my personal dogs! But red socks have gotta massively improve the appearance of my feet. Must. Knit. Faster.

During this time when I am not knitting very fast or finding much time to knit slowly, even, I've been visiting the artist Karen Searle's online gallery, especially her fiber works. She's teaching at Convergence; I wish I could go just to take her sculpture workshop. If you're going, please tell absolutely all upon your return. And the mention of Convergence (sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of America) reminds me to plug local and national guilds; have you checked the one that's convenient to you? There's a wealth of information and talent and experience in every one. I loves me guilds, near and far and across several states. See the Austin Knitters and Crocheters Guild entertaining Joan Schrouder (or vice versa) at Austin knitter MEM's Little Yarn Shoppe of Horrors.

Enjoy the day; enjoy your knitting; enjoy a guild near you.
