GOLD NUGGETS

Ingredients:

1/2 cup white sugar`
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup margarine
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups sifted all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 tsp grated orange rind (optional)

Directions:

Cream together margarine and sugars. Add egg and vanilla, blend well.. Add sifted dry ingredients and orange rind. Knead until the mixture is creamy smooth. Chill dough. Take up a small portion of dough and roll on a bread board under the flat palms of the hands into a rope about 3/8" thick. Pick up a length of the rope about 4" long. Lay on a cookie sheet and with a thin sharp knife cut off a piece about 3/8 " long. Slide the rope away fron the cut piece and cut off another piece. Continue in this way until the row on the cookie sheet, close to one edge, is filled. Begin the next row about 3/8" from the first. Continue until the cookie sheet is filled with rows of nuggets. Bake at 375 until light brown, (approximately 5 to 8 min). With a spatula, slide the nuggets off the cookie sheet onto a cloth to cool.

The rolling and cutting method for the nuggets may sound tedious but once you "get the hang" of sliding and cutting the rope on the cookie sheet it goes quite rapidly. Resist the temptation to make the nuggets larger; their tiny size is a part of their crispness and charm as "nibblers".
